DCF chief says this will be the year of mental health
10/15/08—George Sheldon, the Department of Children & Families’ new secretary, says he wants to make this "the year for mental health." Sheldon’s comments came during a recent interview with the Daytona Beach News -Journal editorial board.

Sheldon told the editorial board he wants to divert funding used for some beds at state forensic treatment facilities to provide case management and other services in the community to help stop people with mental illnesses from revolving in and out of jail.
In addition, Sheldon said he wants to suspend the scheduled opening of 25 new forensic treatment facility beds and instead use the money for a pilot project for intervention programs in Miami-Dade County.
